BOYSEN contributes to cleaner air through revolutionary 'air-cleaning' paint

January 08 2012 -
Clean air is essential to life, and we need pure, unadulterated air in order to maintain good health. But modern living, with its priority for industrialization and convenient transportation, has put a heavy toll on the atmosphere where we breathe. In many regions of the world, especially in the Asia-Pacific, air pollution has become an utmost concern.
In the Philippines, the quality of breathable air is suffering at an alarming rate, most especially in the urban centers like Metro Manila.
Recent incidences of smog formation over Metro Manila are indications of continued deterioration of air quality. It even affected the early morning traffic in some main thoroughfares like Commonwealth Avenue, East Avenue and EDSA as poor visibility caused by the smog poses a danger to motorists. Unfortunately, not too many people know that smog is a threat to human health, especially to those who exercise outdoors in the morning. And now, we can’t even blame the weather as the cause of illnesses because each of us is partly responsible for its occurrence.
Every little bit counts in the fight against air pollution. A study in Europe has found that even very small cuts in pollution can benefit health, and a recent Harvard University study found that people living in cities where air pollution decreased in recent decades saw their life expectancy increase an average of five months as a result of cleaner air.
In the Philippines, efforts by the government and concerned NGOs have created an awareness that air pollution is something that all of us should fight through simple acts. While bio-fuel production has slowly gained acceptance among car owners, something still needs to be done with the continued increase in toxic gases like sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions, and particulate matter, especially found in the city atmosphere.
BOYSEN® KNOxOUT represents a big change in what paint can do. Traditionally paint has been used to protect and beautify structures such as walls, doors and roofs. Now, KNOxOUT introduces a new concept – paint that protects people from the ill effects of air pollution. While most “eco-friendly” paints are focused on low VOC levels to minimize their negative impact on the environment, BOYSEN® KNOxOUT establishes a new paradigm for green paints – that of an eco-ACTive paint with Air Cleaning Technology, which effectively transforms painted areas into “air purifiers” that continuously work to reduce air pollution and improve the environment.
KNOxOUT is the first air cleaning paint in the world with CristalACTiV photocatalytic technology that effectively transforms painted areas into air purifying surfaces that help protect people from the ill health effects of air pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It contains photocatalytic titanium dioxide, which upon exposure to light, transforms ordinary water vapor to free radicals that break down NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the two components of smog. Harmful NOx gas is converted to nitric acid that is rapidly neutralized by alkaline calcium carbonate particle in the paint, producing harmless quantities of calcium nitrate and negligible amounts of carbon dioxide and water.
KNOxOUT™ not only meets the VOC limits set by international paint eco-labeling standards, but it actually has the potential to achieve a net VOC reduction in its lifetime; in other words, it will break down more VOCs in the air when dry than the small amounts of VOCs it has when wet.
Already, through its clean air initiative project called One Wall, One World has been implemented in key cities in Metro Manila like Marikina and Makati, where the positive effects of using BOYSEN® KNOxOUT is already felt by the residents.
